Winged Artistry: The Fine Art of Taxidermy

The first "Winged Artistry" will be presented in September 2008 at the Stanton W. Mead and Visitor Center, located at the George W. Mead Wildlife Area in Central Wisconsin. Organized by the Mead Wildlife Area staff and supported by the Friends of Mead/McMillan Association, Inc. the exhibition seeks to present the best artistic presentations of birds in taxidermy and will offer visitors an opportunity to view native bird species in their natural plumage and re-created natural habitat. The exhibition complements the Woodson Art Museum's opens link in new window annual "Birds in Art" exhibition September 6 - November 9, 2008.

Approximately 25 artworks will be selected by a jury that will take into consideration artistic presentation, artisanship, anatomy, and life-like appearance of the bird(s) and portrayal of natural habitats. Winged Artistry Prospectus (PDF) opens link in new window

The jury will consist of three jurors who represent the fields of taxidermy, art, and science.

People's Choice Award

A "People's Choice Award" will be presented each year, based on visitor balloting and the final selection of the most popular artist.

"Winged Artistry" will open to the public on the second Saturday following Labor Day every year and will be on view for five weeks. Specific "Winged Artistry" education programs and special events will be available on line by August 22 each year.
