Volunteer Opportunities at the Mead
POSITION DESCRIPTION: ASSISTANT EDUCATION FACILITATOR
Job Duties: An individual in this position will assist Mead personnel in carrying out planned educational programming. Educational programming is primarily designed for school age children with an activity based approach. Facilitators will become involved in session set-up, presentation of material, and individual assistance to participating children. Experienced individuals, if appropriate, may become directly involved in the presentation of select sessions. Training will be provided.
Knowledge Required:
- Knowledge of or familiarity with teaching techniques and approaches.
- Biology background or interest in the natural world.
- Desire to work with children and unending patience.
- Must like being out of doors.
Hours: A person in this position must be available weekdays. Our busiest periods are late April through early June. Hours may range from 6 to 24 hours per week, depending on an individual's personal schedule and availability. Program schedules are preset in advance and will be available for planning purposes.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: FACILITY CLEANER
Job Duties:An individual in this position will assist in general weekly cleaning of the facility in between monthly scheduled professional cleanings. Duties will include vacuuming, mopping, dusting, and cleaning of sinks and counters. The facility will be divided into sections to provide reasonable assignment of areas needing cleaning. A cleaning log will be kept by participating cleaners to ensure an orderly and complete cleaning of the facility. Cleaning supplies and equipment will be provided.
Knowledge Required: General cleaning skills.
Hours: Hours may range from 2 to 4 hours per week per cleaner. It is estimated that a total cleaning of the facility will involve 8 cleaner hours per week.
Days: Weekdays. Cleaners may undertake cleaning on their schedule after calling in to the Mead office to avoid conflicts with scheduled building use.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: VOLUNTEER GREETER
Job Duties: An individual working in this position will be the initial and principle contact person for visitors to the center. Each Greeter will be provided materials, handouts, and general information to aid them in performing the tasks of this position. General information in regard to center design, renewable energy systems, educational programming, and fund-raising opportunities may be provided to the visitor upon request. A manual and log will be created for Greeters to use when they are volunteering at the center. An experienced person in this position may also provide, at times, tours of the facility. Information explaining the purpose, recreational opportunities, and use of the wildlife area will be provided to the public. Individuals who are out-going and who will enjoy talking with and disseminating information to the public are best suited for this position.
Knowledge Required:
- An understanding of the green building aspects and renewable energy systems incorporated into the center.
- Familiarity with the mission of the wildlife area, educational programming offered at the center, and general use of the wildlife area.
Hours: Hours may range from 4 to 16 hours per month depending on the greeter's availability.
Days: Saturdays: 10:00am to 2:00pm (April thru October). Weekdays: As available.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: GROUNDS MAINTENANCE PERSON
Job Duties: An individual in this position will undertake general weekly maintenance of the facility. Duties will include sweeping of sidewalks and kiosks, cob-web removal, planting of prairie forbs, planting of trees and shrubs, bird feeder maintenance, cleaning of exterior windows and doors, and snow shoveling. A log will be kept to keep track of items that have been and need to be accomplished. Training will be provided.
Knowledge Required:
- Familiarity with hand tools used in lawn and garden work.
- A desire to work out of doors and the ability to work alone or with others.
Hours: Hours may range from 2 to 4 hours per week per person. It is estimated that grounds maintenance of the facility will total 8-15 hours per week during the warmer months and 2 hours per week during the winter.
Days: Weekdays and occasional weekend days, as volunteer's schedule allows.
Term: Any level of invovlement welcomed, long term committments at your discretion.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: WILDLIFE AREA ASSISTANT
Job Duties: An individual in this position will undertake general weekly wildlife area maintenance activities. Duties will include gate maintenance, lawn mowing, dike patching, maintenance of the bicycle trail, signing, brushing, trail monitoring, rookery maintenance, woodduck house maintenance, and surveys. A log will be kept to keep track of items that have been and need to be accomplished. Training will be provided.
Knowledge Required:
- A desire to work outdoors.
- Familiarity with hand tools used in general maintenance and construction.
- Valid Wisconsin drivers license.
- Ability to work alone or with others.
Hours: Hours may range from 2 to 12 hours per week per person. Individual may work on own schedule for select tasks after establishing an experience base.
Days: Weekdays and occasional weekend days, as volunteer's schedule allows.
Term: Any level of invovlement welcomed, long term committments at your discretion.
