Friends of the Mead/McMillan

The Friends of the Mead/McMillan Association, Inc. (the "Friends") is a private, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the purpose of protecting the Mead and McMillan wildlife areas and in assisting with educational, wildlife, interpretive, and management activities. The Friends incorporated on April 25, 1996 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. The organization is composed of individuals from many different backgrounds interested in increasing public understanding, appreciation, support, and enjoyment of wildlife. The Friends currently has over 200 members and a 15 member Board of Directors to oversee operations. As a member, you will receive a copy of the Wetland's Gazette, the Friends newsletter.

Friends' Goals

  • Increase funding for educational support.
  • Improve access and use of the handicap facilities on the property.
  • Create citizen support for the management activities on the property.
  • Expand and promote walking trail system.
  • Promote the Mead as birding area.
  • Purchase much needed operational and habitat maintenance equipment.
  • Provide updated maps of the property.
  • Create a trail system with viewing areas.

A few of the many successes of the Friends

  • Purchase snowshoes for visiting school children.
  • Purchase various animal mounts for display in the Education and Visitor Center.
  • Offer teacher scholarships for courses provided at the Mead.
  • Purchase microscopes for visiting school children.
  • Purchase a computer for the newly hired educator position.
  • Update Audubon Trail signage.
  • Supply funds for limited term employees at the Mead.
  • Assist with and plan many of the events held at the Mead.

The Friends also contributed $77,700 to the Mead Wildlife Area Trust in support of a fulltime educator position. Support the Friends today by becoming a member. Please view the page on contributing to the Mead Wildlife Area for information on the many methods to assist the Mead.
